A popular way to play poker are going to more tournaments. In a poker tournament, all players start with the same amount of chips, and then the game continues until all players have lost their chips. Except one-the winner.
Your position in the tournament
Your finishing place in the tournament is decided by the number of players that are left when you lose your last chip. If five players remain, you finish sixth, and so on.
Division prize pool
Usually in poker tournaments, the winner does not take all. Instead, the prize pool is divided among players who are in the best positions. But the winner gets a bigger piece of cake, so winning a tournament is good anyway. Very nice, actually.
Increasing blinds and antes
To ensure that the tournament ends within a reasonable time, the blinds or antes increase at fixed intervals. Thus, if you do not get your chip stack grow, you will find the blinds or antes very costly after a while.
Types of Tournaments
Poker tournaments come in different varieties. Often, ten people sit around a table to play a tournament. In others, gather hundreds or even thousands of players. But you can also play a tournament against just one opponent!
Sit and Go
A sit-and-go (S & G) begins as soon as enough players have joined. Normally, an S & G consists of nine or ten players around a table, but there are also S & Gs for two or three tables.
Multi-table tournaments
A multi-table tournament, also called multi-table (MTT) starts at a predetermined time. You can accept hundreds or thousands of players.
Heads-up tournaments
In a face to face tournament, two players sit down with the same amount of chips and play until one of them has all the chips. The blinds or antes are increased during the tournament.
Satellites
A satellite is a tournament where first prize is not paid in money, but with another seat in another tournament. The idea is that you can enter an expensive tournament by winning a tournament is not as expensive.
For example, if ten players sit down and play in a $ 10 tournament, the winner could win a seat in a $ 100 tournament.
In large satellites, you can grab different seats.
Re-buys and add-ons
The particular thing about tournaments is that you can open your wallet and buy more chips, as in a normal cash game. When you run out of chips, you're out of the tournament.
However, some tournaments allow you to actually buy more chips - make a repurchase or re-buy-but only during the so-called re-buy period at the beginning of the tournament. Depending on the specific tournament rules, you can make a limited or unlimited rebuys. When you finish the period of re-buys, you make a last re-buy so-called add-on.
After re-buy period, the tournament continues normally, with players who deplete their batteries as they lose their last chips.
The re-buys and add-ons are added to the prize pool.
A tournament with no re-buys or add-ons is called a freezeout.
Game Advice For Tournaments
Avoiding close calls
In a cash game, if you get all your chips into the pot with a hand that is not the favorite, you'll be a long-term winner, but lose a pot once in a while. But in a tournament, if you lose in a situation of risky, you're out of the tournament. Why you may want to be a bit more patient in the tournament, and wait for stronger hands.
On the other hand, your opponents will be more cautious, something that can take advantage.
Playing on the bubble
The bubble is the highest finishing place not paid. If the ten best places are paid, place eleven is the bubble.
Being the player in the highest position that gets no money is somehow the worst possible result in a tournament. You have invested a lot of time without getting any reward for it.
Therefore, play on the bubble may be quite different. If you have a small stack of chips, why would you put it at risk when you can get into the money just waiting for another player to lose? If on the other hand, have plenty of chips and the small stacks are waiting to lose each and you may get some uncontested pots.
